Quick Cellphone Repair

Buying a used game console without the surprises.

A used console is a great deal when it outputs video cleanly, runs cool, and comes with a working controller. We power it on and test all three with you.

A used game console is a smart buy when it outputs a clean picture, the fan runs quiet, the storage is healthy, and a controller is included and working. We sell used game consoles at seven Lehigh Valley stores, and we power every one on to test these points with you before you pay.

Written by the technicians at Quick Cellphone Repair. This is how we handle this job at our seven Lehigh Valley stores — not a generic web article.

We have sold and serviced used game consoles in the Lehigh Valley since 2015, from seven stores open 10 AM to 8 PM every day, so we power them on before they go out. The checks run in order. Video output first, because a console that shows no signal is either an HDMI port or a cable, and we test with our own known-good cable and screen. The fan and vents next, since a loud fan or hot exhaust points at dust and the overheating we repair. Storage, because a failing drive corrupts saves. Account status, so it is signed out of the previous owner. At least one working controller, tested in your hands. The condition grade, Brand New, Like New, Good, or Fair, is on the tag. The device sales policy is the warranty for the console.

Power it on and watch the picture

The first thing we do with a used game console is plug it in and turn it on. A console that boots to a clean picture on our screen with our known-good cable has passed the check that matters most to a buyer.

If it shows no signal, that is the HDMI path, cable, or port, which our console no signal guide covers. If it will not power on at all, the console won't turn on guide walks through that. We rule both out before it is sold.

Listen to the fan while it runs. A quiet console is a cool console. A loud one usually just needs dust cleared, but you should know that before you buy, not after.

Heat, storage, and controllers

Heat is what kills consoles, so we feel the exhaust and listen to the fan after it has run for a minute. A console that already runs hot in the store will only get worse in a closed cabinet at home. Our overheating guide explains what that costs you.

Storage matters because a failing drive corrupts game saves and installs. We confirm the console reads and writes storage cleanly. A console with plenty of free space saves you buying an expansion on day one.

A controller should be in the box and working. We test the sticks, the triggers, and the buttons in your hands. Drifting sticks are common on used controllers, so this is a real check, not a formality.

Account, grade, and price

A used game console should be signed out of the previous owner's account and reset so it is ready for yours. We confirm that at the counter so you are not locked out of the store or someone else's library.

The condition grade, Brand New through Fair, is on the tag. A Good-grade console that runs cool and comes with a solid controller is often the best value, since cosmetic scuffs do not affect a single frame of gameplay.

Compare what is in stock on shop gaming, and see the full console repair service if you want a used unit checked over. The device sales policy is the warranty for the console you buy.
